Chaya focuses its work on the following programmatic areas: Chaya's Direct Services provides culturally sensitive advocacy services and peer support to women that call our help line and come through referrals from other agencies, law enforcement and the court system. We work in close partnership with mainstream agencies and service providers to ensure that our clients have access to all available resources needed to keep themselves and their children safe. We also provide translation and interpretation services for our clients through our volunteer base, whenever possible. Through our Community Mobilization and Awareness Building program we reach out to South Asian communities and disseminate information about Chaya´s services, establish relationships, increase awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence, facilitate discussions and dialogue around issues of violence, gender and power and work to change attitudes that condone violence. We offer Trainings and Workshops to increase understanding of issues and practices specific to South Asian communities. These are provided to service providers and law enforcement agencies who are involved in direct service and crisis intervention to allow them to more sensitively interact with South Asian clients. Chaya organizes two main fundraising events during the year:
We also have formed partnerships with other organizations like Tasveer, which is committed to supporting independent South Asian films that grapple with relevant social issues. Chaya also represents the South Asian perspective on key women’s issues at the policy level and is part of an ongoing national dialogue on strategies to address the issue of domestic violence in Asian Pacific Islander communities. We have been active in responding to community concerns which currently includes organizing the South Asian community to respond to issues of backlash and discrimination since September 11, and working in coaliton with other organizations to advocate for immigrant rights. |
